ROLE DESCRIPTION:

The Canteen Assistant, under the direction of the Canteen Manager works to support the daily operation of the Ballarat High School Canteen.

The Canteen serves a student population of 1500 and a staff of 160 personnel, and operates each day of the school year where students are in attendance.

The Canteen team comprises paid staff and some community volunteers.

The Canteen is owned and operated by the School Council, who have determined that all profits be directed towards their ongoing commitment to improved school facilities.

Ballarat High School is a member of the Australian School Canteen Association.

The position is part time, working 25 hours per week, equally across 5 days. There is no requirement to work during School Vacation times, except a single day immediately preceding the commencement of each school term.

As a member of the Ballarat High School staff, the range of duties may be extended in the future in accordance with the Award.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

To prepare and sell food and beverage products for sale to the school community, at a profit, each school day of the year.
To promote and monitor a menu that is nutritious, varied and enjoyed by the school community.
To help ensure the Canteen operates to a high standard and according to all applicable Government and Department of Education and Training regulations and policies. Including;
Go For Your Life and Healthy Eating
Food Safety and Handling
OHS
Assist in maintaining a pleasant working environment for all staff and volunteers, ensure high standards of customer service and excellent communications with all external parties.
Assist in providing catering for school functions/activities as required.
Assist with the promotion of the Canteen, its services, volunteer requirements etc.
Utilise computer applications to assist with operational functions when required.
Participate in staff/team meetings as required and follow the professional expectations of staff.
Act as Canteen Manager, when required.
Participate in a process of Annual Review and Professional Learning.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA:

Applicants are requested to present a written response to the key selection criteria below:

1.         Demonstrated ability and experience in preparing nutritious and varied food and beverage items, which also promote healthy choices.

2.         A demonstrated commitment to customer service, including the ability to relate positively to students.

3.         Demonstrated experience in the implementation of Food Safety Programs and standards.

4.         Knowledge of nutrition and health eating, and an understanding of the government guidelines and policies on the operation of school canteens.

5.         Capacity to work co-operatively and effectively with a large range of people.

6.         Hold Food Handling qualifications.WHO MAY APPLY:

Individuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfil the specific requirements of the position.  Current staff at Ballarat High School.
